Mars Shipwreck

Mars Shipwreck

Mars Makalös — one of Gustav Vasa's most powerful warships — sank in a dramatic battle off Öland in 1564. The wreck is one of the most significant marine archaeological finds in the Baltic Sea and has attracted considerable scientific and public attention.

Ocean Discovery contributed photogrammetric 3D documentation of the Mars wreck. The work was carried out in collaboration with research teams and resulted in geo-referenced models that allow archaeologists to study the wreck digitally and plan future excavations without disturbing the sensitive find environment. The models have been used in scientific publications and museum exhibitions.
